I don't even have to change any orders.īut she developed a really nasty habit of banning the export of rhyolite. I mean, when she asks rhyolite items to be produced, no problem, I have got tons of the stuff and I am constantly making rock crafts, mugs, and so on for trade. So, let's allow that to slip.Ī bigger problem is my trade minister's love for rhyolite. But then again, this ended with my metalsmith spending 26 days in jail, which wasn't bothering her too much. Okay, when the guildmaster asked for an iron item to be made, I was kind of stuck since I haven't found the required ore yet. Their mandates were usually easily met, and they don't complain that much if it takes me a year or two to make their rooms ready. Until now, I didn't have much trouble with the nobles. Having all the nobles and their required lackeys take up Įven the better machines aint that expensive anymore. They would still want 15% of adults working in the guard forces. In my imaginary 1000 dwarf fortress, nobles would make up less than 5%. My poor, tired old computer probably won't want to deal with more than 50 dwarfs if it also has to deal with multiple levels. I have a feeling the next version will only make things worse. I'd have a dozen metalworkers, half a dozen jewelers, and a scores of miners and other workers that would easily be able to keep up with all but the most unreasonable of mandates. Having all the nobles and their required lackeys take up < 20% of the total population would be much better. That leaves only 54 dwarfs, 59% of the total population, as healthy adults able to actually help build and maintain the fortress, _and_ deal with the demands and mandates of the 16 nobles. It's not the nobles' fault, but children exist. Collectively that means that because of the nobles, 32% of my dwarfs dwarfs are not directly productive. The Baron wants 4 of them in the Royal Guard. 16 of them are nobles, That is nearly 18%! Plus the nobles want to divert some of my workers into the (mostly useless) standing guard: The sheriff wants 9 of them in the Fortress Guard. (Even with weather and temperature turned off, this leaves me with about 25 fps). With 1000 dwarfs, even if I had every possible noble and a couple extra widowed consorts, the nobles would make up less than 5% of the population.Īs it is I have my population cap set to 90. Then I could set my population cap to 500 or 1000. I'd like nobles better if I had a top of the line computer that could handle hundreds of dwarfs (and their pets) running around without dropping below a frame rate of 30. we'd get a lot less crazy demands if it was the noble that had to get beaten if they failed! Or maybe just bring those pompous buffoons down to size. I hope eventually we have some social engineering options, so we can turn our fortress into a more egalitarian society where nobles must serve society, with barons and kings and the like needing to suit up and lead the army from the front when trouble calls. the rest can all rot in a talc sarcophagus for all I care. but I think all I need are brokers, bookkeepers, =maybe= some kind of trade representative. I've never actually deliberately killed a noble. I can never be quite certain I'm getting all I can from them otherwise. Brokers also free me from playing that guessing game with the caravans. I also really like to melt down poorly sized iron items, large daggers and tall chainmail and the like, and that can't be done without a bookkeeper. Exactly how many skulls do I have? How many bodies after fighting off that goblin siege that slaughtered the caravan? I have to get a bookkeeper eventually, I need to know exactly what's in my fortress if I'm curious. Personally I can't do without certain nobles. Nobles let us think of creative ways to kill them.
